The Ipê Power Plant continues with its history of sustainability PDF Print E-mail

Throughout the history of Ipê Power Plant, it has always been socio-environmentally active, and most recently is its endorsement of the Semear Program in Dracena.

The Ipê Power Plant is part of the Pedra Agroindustrial group, which has focused on agribusiness since 1931. This group works to create a landscape of equality between economic, social and environmental development, in order to contribute to the quality of life of today's society and in the future. To maintain continuity across its socio-environmental activities, Ipê Power Plant recently joined the Semear Program, which looks to work with rehabilitation and reforestation.

The Semear Program is a joint venture between sugar and alcohol plants; the Brazilian Forest Institute; the Environment Office; the Municipality of Dracena, and Dracena Penitentiary Prison. The Semear project is a socio-environmental activity which targets rehabilitation work in the Adriano Aparecido de Pieri Detention Centre, in Dracena, where the prisoners will work cultivating seedlings, which will be destined for reforestation, financed by the Caeté Power Plant. In the nursery, more than 2 million high quality seedlings will be produced each year, whose quality is guaranteed by the Brazilian Forest Institute.

Socio-environmental activities always existed throughout the history of the Group, for example the unison with the Environmental Protocol Green Ethanol. The Protocol is an agreement reached between the Secretary of State for Environment, The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Provisions, and the Union of Sugar-cane Industries - UNICA (the entity that represents the sector) which establishes a deadline for putting an end to sugar cane burning. On joining this compact, the Power Plant received the "Certificate of Agro-environmental conformity", which is annually renewed when the targets established in the action plan are met.

The primary activities of Pedra Agroindustrial are the production of alcohol (a product obtained by the fermentation of sugar cane solution), from intermediary products in the production of sugar. besides the production of different kinds of sugar, like VVHP and VVHPC, destined for the foreign market, and the white sugar crystals destined for the internal market, the power plant also produces electricity from the sugar cane husks, which meets the internal consumption of the entire company and still offers surplus energy to the local consumer market.
